The epistemology of western China studies communities were embedded in individual research experience, cultural background, international relations and metaphysical pathos of research. This dissertation focuses on Elizabeth J. Perry, a left-wing scholar of the 1960s American radical era, and explores her image of the Chinese Revolution, the unique assertion of grass-root protest research and the continuity and transition of her work, through in-depth interviews and comparative analysis of her famous works on grass-root protests. This dissertation suggests that, the research approach of protester-center in Perry’s China studies, were greatly influenced by the ideology of anti-war and anti- American Imperialism in the late 1960s. In the Economics Reform Era of the 1980s, Perry still asserts that Chinese Revolution legacy exits in contemporary China’s politic, economy and society when the Chinese Revolution attracted few admirers in the American academia even among those who initially argued for its positive contribution,. Moreover, the perspective of “ Bringing the Revolution back in” evolves into “ Revolutionary Authoritarianism”, and makes her arguments of Chinese state-society relation differ from the state-centered, society-centered approach, Corporatism and Embedded Theory. Finally, even though Perry’s research perspective has changed from society to state, her history-centered framework helps her studies retain more Chinese feature comparing with other mainstream paradigm. |
