Nonylphenol (NP) is a nonionic surfactant used in many industrial and domestic applications, belonging to a group of pollutants which are widely distributed in aquatic environment. NP is toxic and possessing the ability to disrupt the function of endocrine system by mimicking hormone, blocking or stimulating hormonal production. The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize the bacterial strains capable of degrading NP from coastal seawaters of Taiwan The phylogenetic analysis according to 16S rDNA sequences revealed that 35 strong degrading activity isolates belonged to genus Vibrio, Aeromonas, Alteromonas, Shewanella and Pseudoalteromonas, respectively. Through the test of NP removal, 10 isolates exhibited the highest rate of degradation of NP, when compared with the other isolates. The results showed that NP was readily degraded by theses isolates with 20-30% of the total NP being removed within 7 days. It is apparent that NP should have already been degraded by these isolates |
