With the American series Modern Family as a study case, this research investigates audience’s comprehension of the humor translation in the subtitles as to how they perceive two different subtitle versions, official subtitles on streaming platforms and fan-translated subtitles; the study is particularly focused on those audiences who heavily rely on subtitles while viewing foreign audiovisual works. While previous studies in audio-visual translation (AVT) focus more on translation techniques and stylistic differences between official translation and fansubbing translation, this study focuses more on the audience’s reception of translation approaches and annotations in the two types of subtitles. By showing the selected scenes from Modern Family to the audience, conducting semi-structured interviews, and recording their response and opinions toward different versions of subtitles, the study aims to explore how subtitle-reliant audiences assess the humor effect respectively presented in the official subtitle translation and fansub translation. The collected data is then categorized and analyzed to discover significant factors that influence how subtitle-reliant audiences evaluate subtitles. In addition, the study hopes to revisit the notion of the “professional” official subtitle being superior to the “amateur” fan-translated subtitle in terms of quality and reader’s preference.
