The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of the strategy game Go in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation. I research why people in Taiwan played Go in those turbulent times, the interaction between Japanese and Taiwanese players, especially how Japanese professional players who came to Taiwan had a great impact on the development of Go in Taiwan. The research method of this thesis is to analyze the newspapers, diaries, books and magazine writings from the Japanese occupation, and compile those articles that include keywords related to Go. First, this thesis elaborates the background of Taiwan's Go and discusses the reasons why and how Taiwanese people learned Go. In addition, this thesis also focuses on Go exchange activities between Taiwan and Japan. Furthermore, because most Go players were upper class, the development of Go also included reasons of political and economic gain in that era. This thesis lists several cases and discusses how these factors impacted the society. Finally, this thesis suggests a future research direction to investigate Japanese and Korean interaction in Go during the same era, and takes the perspective of how colonization and being colonized have changed through history to explore the exchanges and interactions between relevant individuals, in order to explain the role that Go culture has played in the development of Taiwan-Japanese relations. |
