This thesis is the study of the development of Mariology and devotion to Mary between the 1st and the 7th century, from the beginning of Christianity to the eve of iconoclasm. Its goal is to present the development of Mariology in its religious and historical background, the paradoxes and contradictions in it, and the differences and likenesses between Mary and other Goddess cults, which lead us to understand the peculiarity of Christianity and how it changed when progressing into a more popular religion. Then we can try to interpret the meaning of the history of Mariology, which, as this thesis presents, is to help us to rethink the idea of an omnipotent God and the relationship between God and men. |
