西元第一到第七世紀聖母論與聖母信仰之發展與其歷史意義

Abstract

本研究包含的時期為西元第一到第七世紀，由基督教出現、新約聖經逐漸成書開始，直到拜占庭帝國偶像破壞運動前夕為止，也就是聖母信仰從無到有的創生發展壯大過程。本研究第一部分將整理聖母論中與基督性質──也就是在基督教定義下的上帝性質──有密切關連的部分，以此勾勒出聖母論如何出現於基督論的建構過程中，神學家是如何詮釋新舊約聖經來賦予聖母各種身分地位，來以此作為其基督論立論的基石或佐證。第二部分則呈現作為「獨立角色」的聖母形象，以聖母論中出現對「信徒聖母」的描述開始，討論聖母如何逐漸成為信徒所望的典範，以及聖母作為教會先期典型說的建立。第三部分以聖母的神格化為主軸，討論原本作為基督論輔佐的聖母論如何開始將原本僅賦予上帝的能力或地位賦予聖母，也就是聖母如何成為一個「近似上帝」或「有能力改變上帝決策」的偉大信仰對象，並兼及此種發展在民間信仰以及政治活動中的展現。最後的目的在於以有限的史料大略描繪第一到第七世紀之間聖母信仰的發展脈絡，並將其內容置於兩個更大的背景之中：一是基督教本身教義發展的過程，二是當時基督教世界的政治與社會狀態，以此討論聖母信仰中不同部分所呈現出來的神學發展、信仰取向、社會道德價值、以及政教互動等等，並在最後欲以此整體知識探究聖母信仰本質，其歷史發展特色與其歷史意義，以及其所能夠提供的反省。

This thesis is the study of the development of Mariology and devotion to Mary between the 1st and the 7th century, from the beginning of Christianity to the eve of iconoclasm. Its goal is to present the development of Mariology in its religious and historical background, the paradoxes and contradictions in it, and the differences and likenesses between Mary and other Goddess cults, which lead us to understand the peculiarity of Christianity and how it changed when progressing into a more popular religion. Then we can try to interpret the meaning of the history of Mariology, which, as this thesis presents, is to help us to rethink the idea of an omnipotent God and the relationship between God and men.
