This study explores how Mainland China students' experience in Taiwan affects their perspective of Chinese. This study asks: does Mainland China students' experience in Taiwan affect how "patriotic'' they are to their country? Or would they be more willing to defend China's image because of their Taiwan experience? Would they be more open to communication because of their Taiwan experience? Would Mainland China students have moved from a "Pro-Taiwan" stance to being indifferent to Taiwan, or even "more patriotic". Based on the identity theory and interviews with 6 Mainland China students, this research attempts to summarize how the experience of studying in Taiwan by Chinese students affects their perceptions of Chinese in three aspects: the "assimilation aspect" derived from the respondents' views, perspectives, and values; the "patriotic aspect" derived from the respondents' emotions; and the "communication aspect" derived from the respondents' practical behaviors. This thesis finds that these three aspects all illustrate the diverse effects of Taiwan's experience on Chinese students' perspective of Chinese, thus rejecting the argument in studies of Mainland China students that contact with Taiwan is found to deepen their yearning for democratic values. At the same time, it also complicates the presumption that Chinese students' overseas study experiences make them more "patriotic'' in studies of patriotism among overseas Chinese students today.Although the interviews of six Mainland China students in Taiwan on which the findings of this study are based is a small sample, this thesis is still instructive for understanding the overall status of Mainland China students, and can serve as a precursor to the theorization of future Mainland China students research. This thesis argues that contact with Taiwan affects Mainland China students in many ways, but it also further exacerbates the ideological conflict between China and Taiwan, which further reduces students' willingness to communicate and frustrates their ability to figuratively understand their positionality. However, this study also finds that Mainland students contact with Taiwan has the possibility to transcend the binary opposition brought by the context of "patriotism",and these students have not closed the door on communications, despite reduced willingness to to do so. |
