Abstract: | Is there a link between Corporate Culture and Community Outreach efficacy? This thesis evaluates, compares, and contrasts both the corporate culture and community outreach efforts of two major technology companies operating in Taiwan: Trend Micro and Dell.
In order to evaluate company culture, this thesis uses business ethics criteria as a first step and develops a pointed survey that is then disseminated to a random selection of employees within each corporation. The results are then used to create a company culture rating for each company. Based on this evaluation, this thesis finds that as compared to Dell Taiwan, Trend Micro Taiwan has a relatively stronger company culture. In order to evaluate community outreach, this thesis utilizes multiple industry frameworks for a basis and derives a new evaluation framework. This new framework is then applied to three major community outreach projects (two at Trend Micro and one at Dell) to come out with an overall assessment of the community outreach programs in specific and of Trend micro and Dell in general. This thesis also introduces a community outreach survey assessment to collect first hand input from employees at both companies. Using the survey results, this thesis goes on to draw conclusions and compare both Trend Micro and Dell on the different merits of their respective programs. In the literature review, a clear distinction is drawn on what constitutes an effective community outreach program. Emphasis is put on creating sustainable projects that benefit and enable the community. Using both the derived assessment framework and survey results, this thesis draws the conclusion that there is a slight relationship between company culture and effective community outreach, but cautions that the sample size and scope of evaluation would need to be increased to prove a strong correlation. Finally, this thesis makes suggestions on how to improve the effectiveness of both the Trend Micro and Dell community outreach programs. |
