The purpose of this study was to assess participants’ learning process and outcomes of outdoor environmental education camp at Chih-Nan Nature Center. Mixed methods research, which involved combining qualitative and quantity methods was adopted in this study. One-group pretest-posttest design was employed to evaluate the participants’ learning outcomes. Interview data were also combined with survey data to achieve some degrees of cross validation and complementary effects. Furthermore, in order to understand the participants’ learning process, participant observation was used. It is expected that this method can provide a different perspective on the overall effectiveness of the camp. The results showed that outdoor environmental education camp contributed significantly to participants’s environmental conceptual knowledge, environmental awareness and sensitivity, environmental values and attitudes, environmental action skills, and environmental actions intentions. The effect size of 'environmental values and attitudes' subscale is the largest of all goals. On the other hand, the 'environmental actions intentions' subscale is the smallest. In the learning process, activities involving first-hand experiences, challenging activities, life-related courses, direct contact with the animals, and DIY activities all resulted in high levels of engagement. However, participants showed less engagement in orienteering, drawing record and comparison activities. In general, about 96.2% of the participants enjoyed this summer camp, and 84.9% of the participants expressed their willingness to come again to participate in other similar types of camps. In this study, the results and suggestions based on the quantitative and qualitative data analysis were proposed, in the hope of serving as reference for Chih-Nan Nature Center and other outdoor environmental education camps to plan and revise their related activities. |
