Background : Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder mainly characterized by social and communication impairments. However, although less emphasized, ASD indeed suffers from various motor-related deficits such as imitation, understanding and planning of actions, which are all key processes involved in motor cognition. Most of previous research has extensively studied action representation, a basic component of motor cognition, through action imitation and action observation. However, the question concerning about whether ASD has deficits in action representation remains controversial and inconsistent. Objectives: In the current research, we studied the characteristics of action representation in ASD through motor imagery (MI) that allows us to directly investigate the internal embodiment of action representation. We investigated whether the ASD participants use visuo-spatial transformation strategies (i.e., visual MI, which is more similar to object-based visual imagery) instead of kinesthetic information (i.e., kinesthetic MI) to perform motor imagery. Methods: 22 ASD adolescents (11-15 years old) and 22 age- and gender-matched typically-developing (TD) adolescents were recruited in the current study. In the hand rotation task, we used the stimuli of bare-hand and hand-with-spoon to investigate the ability of motor imagery (MI) in intransitive and transitive condition respectively. In the object rotation task, we adopted the stimuli of desk to inspect object-based visual imagery. Results: The two groups did not significantly differ in the accuracy rates in both the hand and the object rotation task; however, compared with the TD participants, the ASD participants demonstrated slower performance only in the hand rotation task. Compatible with the TD group, individuals with ASD can spontaneously use the strategy of kinesthetic MI to perform the hand rotation task, as manifested by significant Biomechanical Constraint effects. In addition, the transitive condition elicited more kinesthetic MI than the intransitive condition both in the two groups, revealed by significant larger Biomechanical Index in the transitive condition s. Conclusion: Our primary findings suggest inefficient but not dysfunctional kinesthetic MI in the ASD participants. Even though ASD is generally characterized by enhanced visual processing, our data clearly showed that they can still spontaneously use kinesthetic MI without explicit instruction, rather than using visual MI as an alternative strategy. The results also reflect that ASD very likely maintain preserved action representation, which affords for applying kinesthetic MI in rehabilitation as an intervention approach for motor deficits in ASD. |
