Human relies on computers for their daily work much more than before. Improper posture and prolonged working may cause hypertension of the upper extremity muscles, leading to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the upper extremity. There were many literatures aimed on investigating the relationship between the usage of traditional and ergonomic computer mouse. However, it was rarely reported the general effect on muscle activity in different mouse positions.
The purposes of the current study were to investigate the effects of different computer mouse positions on upper extremity muscle activities using electromyography analysis. Twenty subjects participated in this study. The activities of ten upper extremity muscles during computer mouse usage were collected in three heights, three forward/backward positions and four slanted surface.
The results of this study will be helpful for computer users to decide the optimum position to use computer mouse and reduce MSDs.
