As a modern poet, Ling-Yü is in a unique position in Taiwanese literary history. She is heavily emphasized for the hard and solid style of language and is well known for minimalist style; however, the inner element is how she feels and senses the world trough a penetrative body sense. This element influences her to create bizarre postures of body positions, presentations of body and exploration in body and space. The main idea of this study is to eliminate the influence of gender and focus on how she represents the world and her self-image.
This project looks at three aspects of the body elements in Ling-Yü’s poetry. Chapter 2 examines the complicated link between body and space including boxes, dark rooms and besieged towns. Chapter 3 focuses on how body imagery advances the narration in poetry. Chapter 4 establishes a framework of body and performance to illuminate the implied meanings and the different ways of poetic writing. Through this study, I claim that the body writing of Ling-Yü’s poems renews the body poetic in modern poetry.
