This thesis examines the figure of the “desperate straight woman” in contemporary urban China—women who embrace radical feminist politics yet remain drawn to heterosexual attachments. They navigate a constant tension between rejecting male privilege and returning to patriarchally shaped desire, notably through restorative viewing of romantic television dramas and emotional involvement with “drenched dog men”, a colloquial term for fragile, melancholic men.

Drawing on the affect turn’s emphasis on embodied feeling and Lauren Berlant’s concept of “cruel optimism,” the study uses autoethnography and in-depth interviews to juxtapose the researcher’s traumatic viewing experiences with participants’ narratives. Findings reveal that this figure is neither mere romantic failure nor simple trauma repetition but embodies the emotional-political impasse of radical feminism in China—unable to fully detach from existing structures, yet capable of generating new ways of sensing and relating within them.
