The advent of social media has had a profound impact on contemporary democratic politics. In particular, many young people born between the 1990s and 2010s belong to the “digital native” generation, also known as “Generation Z.” This group often acquires political knowledge primarily through online platforms and social media. As the future stewards of the nation, whether they are able to tolerate diverse opinions during the process of acquiring and discussing political knowledge is a key factor in determining whether democracy can develop in a long-term and stable manner. Therefore, this study adopts a questionnaire survey approach to sample individuals aged 18 and over in Taiwan, investigating their behavior on social media platforms. It aims to examine whether political party preference influences behaviors such as expressing political opinions, acquiring political information, and perceiving alignment of viewpoints on various social media platforms. This study engages in a dialogue with the theory of selective exposure. At the same time, it also explores whether the use of online social platforms further affects the level of offline political participation among those with partisan preferences. Using an ordered logit model for regression analysis, the study finds that political party preference does indeed have a significant and varied impact on the level of engagement across different social media platforms. |
