This thesis aims to explore the continuation and transformation of the Taipei Dadaocheng City God Parade(稻江迎城隍) amidst urbanization. Due to industrial relocation, population decline, and internal conflicts among organizing bodies, the event met obstacles. With the reappearance of the Bajiajiang(鯤溟八將團) troupe in 2023 and the renewed unity among local Pei-Kuan parade troupes(北管軒社) in 2024, community-based perspectives have gradually re-emerged.
Through in-depth interviews with local organizing groups, Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple affiliates, academics and experts in relevant fields, this thesis seeks to answer two major questions: How did local community groups participating in the 2023–2024 Dadaocheng City God Parade construct their sense of cultural memory? What conflicts and compatibility emerged in the process?
This thesis further investigates how the Dadaocheng City God tradition interacts with and adapts to an urbanized environment, analyzing how local communities strive to preserve and pass on this traditional religious event amidst urban transformation. It also explores how community organizations involved in the festival construct their cultural memory. Through these dialectics and empirical data, the report attempts to articulate the cultural significance and potential future directions of the City God Parade.
