The international situation, along with economic and social changes in the 1970s, led to a shared focus in both Taiwanese and Hong Kong literary circles on the issue of "writing about reality." Aesthetically, writers reflected on the excessive inwardness and obscurity of modernism; in terms of themes, they shifted from exploring personal inner worlds to focusing on the land where they lived and the society they were part of. In Taiwan, these changes sparked a literary trend centered on Local Literature, which significantly influenced the subsequent development of Taiwanese literature. The Local Literature movement of the 1970s has already been the subject of extensive research. What piques my curiosity is how this literary trend, so crucial to the development of Taiwanese literature, manifested in Hong Kong during the same period.
Following this question, this paper attempts to trace the presence of Taiwanese Local Literature in Hong Kong by examining literary magazines and anthologies published there in the 1970s. After the 1967 riots, Hong Kong's leftist forces were suppressed, the localist movement was just beginning to develop, and there were also underground communist forces at play. All three groups were paying attention to the trends in Taiwanese Local Literature. This study will focus on six literary magazines—《中國學生周報》,《四季》, 《大拇指》, 《海洋文藝》, 《文學與美術》, and 《文美月刊》—as well as the 《台灣作家選集》, to observe the communication and reception of Taiwanese Local Literature in Hong Kong, thereby expanding the perspective of research on Local Literature.
