You’re Perfect.
Stage translation has been a focus in translation studies, in which surtitle translation is one of the translation tasks. In Taiwan, research about surtitle and its translation is lacking, showing that surtitle translation study is a newly emerged field in Taiwan that worth investigation. In this research, I Love You. You’re Perfect. Now Change (LPC), an off-broadway licensing musical in Taiwan, is examined to discuss its surtitle translation strategies from the perspective of domestication and with key issues in stage translation. The development of surtitle translation in Taiwan musical industry is also a focus in this study. Through interview and textual analysis, the study found that domestication is an effective strategy for surtitle translation. It improves surtitle reading experience, enhances performability, and achieves desired results for the production team. Regarding the future of licensing musical in Taiwan, despite existing challenges, it appears promising and optimistic. The agency of a surtitle translator and the organic process of surtitle translation are particularly notable in the study, setting surtitle translation apart as distinct within the broader landscape of translation practices.
