This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) technology can address the talent crisis in Taiwan's news broadcasting industry. In recent years, Taiwan's news industry has faced significant talent attrition due to long working hours, low salaries, and unstable work environments. Additionally, the rise of the internet and emerging media has further impacted the industry's visibility. In this challenging context, finding innovative solutions is crucial, and the introduction of AI technology has become a key area of exploration. Firstly, this research reviews the current application of AI technology in the news industry and assesses its potential to mitigate the problem of talent attrition. The multifaceted development of AI has garnered global interest. For instance, China’s Xinhua News Agency and Taiwan's Formosa TV have both launched AI news anchors, sparking widespread discussion and attention in the industry. The introduction of AI anchors has breathed new life into the declining news industry. The management of these news organizations hopes that AI can improve production efficiency, reduce costs, and alleviate the pressure on news workers. Secondly, through in-depth interviews, this study examines the impact of AI anchors on news professionals and the audience's perception of AI anchors. Currently, due to regulatory constraints, generative AI cannot be used in Taiwan’s television stations to save manpower effectively. However, if future regulations permit, AI could significantly expand its role, addressing numerous fundamental tasks such as big data analysis for finding news stories, writing headlines, correcting errors, and drafting news summaries. AI’s capability to analyze and gather large datasets could also enhance the accuracy of reporting. Moreover, AI could serve as a training tool, helping to transfer knowledge and experience within the news industry. Despite these potential benefits, there are concerns about the impact of AI on existing news professionals. The essence of journalism lies in the human element—reporters and anchors bring personal experiences and firsthand accounts to their stories, delivering them with vivid descriptions to engage viewers. The ability to provide human-centric interpretations and insightful analyses imbued with empathy and depth is something AI cannot replicate. |
