Demonstratives are fundamental vocabulary in all languages and are typically introduced in the early stages of language instruction. Previous research on demonstratives has yielded abundant results, encompassing morphological forms, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, grammaticalization, and comparative analysis. However, there is limited literature addressing the impact of cross-linguistic differences in demonstratives on foreign language learning, and even fewer scholars have employed a corpus-based approach to analyze and discuss this issue. This study adopts the method of interlanguage contrastive analysis, observing data from the TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) learner corpus, specifically focusing on learners whose native languages are Japanese and English. Following previous research on demonstratives, the analysis considers language proficiency, genre, pragmatic functions, and referents of demonstratives to examine the differences in the use of Chinese demonstratives between English and Japanese native speakers. Chi-square tests and Fisher's exact tests were employed to confirm the significance of observed differences. The study identifies several factors influencing learners' use of "Zhè" (this) and "Nà" (that), including the classification of demonstratives, the frequency of using "this" and "that" in learners' native languages, and the learners' language proficiency. Overall, learners from both English and Japanese language backgrounds, as their proficiency increases, tend to converge towards the usage tendencies of Chinese native speakers. However, the three-way classification of Japanese demonstratives, unlike the two-way systems in English and Chinese, requires Japanese native speakers to spend more time mastering their usage. Japanese native speakers, in many cases, tend to use more "Nà", especially in genres involving the speaker's perspective, such as letters and narrative texts, or when the referent is a "person"; English native speakers do not exhibit this tendency. Additionally, the study finds that errors in the use of "Zhè" and "Nà" by Japanese and English native speakers mainly arise from direct translation, confirming that the usage of native language demonstratives influences the use of "Zhè" and " Nà." Based on these results, the study suggests that in language instruction, more emphasis should be placed on demonstratives. Beyond addressing the semantic differences of "proximity" and "distance," it is crucial to familiarize learners with the usage patterns or habits of Chinese native speakers, enabling learners to quickly grasp how to use target language demonstratives. |
