The research aims to explore the intricate dynamics of Taiwanese Indigenous heritage within the framework of heritage diplomacy, analyzing its representation in domestic and international media from August 2007 to September 2023. The study employs discourse analysis on articles from three domestic media, namely Taiwan Today, Taipei Times and Taiwan News, and two international media outlets, The Diplomat and Island Times. In the analysis of the domestic media, three primary themes emerge: (1) Political Engagement and Representation; (2) Heritage Preservation and Identity; and, (3) Cultural Diversity and Cultural Exchange. The first theme examines how media biases, historical contexts, and political goals interact to shape how Taiwanese Indigenous heritage is portrayed. This examination highlights the intricacies in media representations as Taiwan struggles with matters of national identity, diplomacy, and cultural conservation. The second theme addresses the subtle complexities that Taiwan’s Indigenous communities face, regarding identity and heritage preservation. It shows that programs related to language, culture, and education offer opportunities as well as difficulties, and media coverage plays a key role in providing both clear and unclear narratives. The third theme emphasizes how government policies, cultural identity, and historical narratives are interconnected in Taiwan. The emphasis on cultural diversity challenges stereotypes and corrects historical omissions, acknowledging constructive initiatives but drawing attention to complex issues like institutional discrimination and the challenge of preserving culture in the face of social injustices. The intricate nature of Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts appears in the international media coverage, which takes into consideration the cultural diversity and Austronesian connection. Media sources show differing degrees of sensitivity to Indigenous heritage and its possible political implications, despite Taiwan’s ongoing struggle for international recognition. The research establishes the foundation for future investigation that hold the potential to improve our comprehension of the multifaceted relationships among politics, media, and culture in the context of Taiwanese Indigenous heritage. |
