This study utilized data from the "Taiwan Education Panel Survey" first wave, including samples of junior high school students and their parents, to examine the impact of sleep duration on students' academic performance. The researchers employed ordinary least squares regression to analyze the correlation between sleep duration and academic performance. The results indicated a negative correlation between the linear term of sleep duration and academic performance, although the correlation was not significant. Additionally, the relationship between sleep duration and academic performance exhibited a concave quadratic pattern. The linear term of sleep duration showed a significant positive correlation with academic performance, while the quadratic term displayed a significant negative correlation.

Furthermore, to address endogeneity issues between sleep duration and academic performance, instrumental variable estimation was employed. The results demonstrated a significant positive effect of sleep duration on academic performance, with a substantial magnitude. Moreover, the impact of sleep duration on academic performance was found to be non-linear. The linear term of sleep duration exhibited a significant positive effect on academic performance, while the quadratic term displayed a significant negative effect.
