Southeast Asian immigrants/migrants are no longer passive audience, but active disseminators. Many of them have created their own media, some serving as editors or journalists inside the media, while others spreading facts and opinions. They have paid their efforts in breaking through the silence and the localization practice of 'citizens' communication rights'. This study is dedicated to the self-reported phenomenon of Southeast Asian immigrants. Life history research has been adopted as the main approach and Vietnam immigrant “Nguyễn Kim Hồng” was chosen for case study. The study has attempted to explore how Nguyễn Kim Hồng becomes a reporter (documentary filmmaker and citizen journalist) through self-empowerment and which type of reporter role she identifies with. Nguyễn's life history is divided into six phases while being told: (a) Being voiceless and powerless as a new immigrant who lost her marriage; (b) Trying to express: develop interest and ability to tell stories with images; (c) Reporting for people of the same fate: New immigrant documentary 'Out/Marriage'; (d) Reporting for compatriots: Migrant Workers documentary 'See You, Lovable Strangers'; (e) Reporting to the public: Participation in the content production of the Citizen Journalism Platform 'PeoPo'; (f) Unfinished, to be continued: Cultural actions within the image and outside the image. The results of this study indicate that Nguyễn has actively grasped the empowerment opportunities in life and reached different levels of empowerment: At the personal level, she has self-esteem, self-efficacy, and sense of control, as a person who can set goals and take relative action to achieve goals; at the interpersonal level, she has formed a relationship for co-learning and mutual support between members of the immigrant communities and nurtured the knowledge, abilities and resources needed to express opinions; at the political level, she has exerted influences and built public dialogue through documentaries, audiovisual news and other forms of cultural action. In addition, Nguyễn has played more than one type of reporter role, with 'the Storyteller' as the core self-positioning. This study has further pointed out that Nguyễn's life course consists of divorce and remarriage, from closed self to society, from silence to autonomous expression, from single to plural, with such reporting status and subject matter, this empowerment process presents a spiraling development trajectory. Furthermore, based on Nguyễn's self-narration on why, how and what to report, this study concludes that the role of 'The Storyteller' includes the following five elements: (a) The production and dissemination of news stories demonstrates the spirit of civic engagement; (b) Collecting the material of the report with the attitude of trend following and not deliberately arranged; (c) Taking the status of a companion and establishing a relationship with the person being reported and participating in his or her life; (d) Discovering the little stories around is, while paying attention to subjective disclosures at specific perspectives; (e) Establishing general empowerment-mechanisms to cultivate more citizen reporters. |
