Nowadays, instant messaging software (e.g., WeChat, Line, and WhatsApp) is the most popular communication channel in the workplace, which might negatively affect employees, according to past research results. This study is based on the conservation of resources theory and boundary theory to examine the effect of ICT demands on ICT-related withdrawal behaviors (i.e., discontinuous ICT usage intention, ignoring ICT messages, and deactivating ICT message alerts) via telepressure. Moreover, I propose a moderated mediation model by examining two kinds of moderators: coping behaviors (i.e., positive reinterpretation and seeking support) and motivation (i.e., intrinsic and extrinsic motivations). I tested this model in Taiwan by setting three time points. In the final sample of 389 participants, I found support for some of my predictions. For example, my results suggest that coping behaviors and motivations may not only weaken the relationships between telepressure and ICT-related withdrawal behaviors but also change the positive main effects into negative effects. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed. |
