This thesis assesses Murdoch’s eminent oeuvre as a whole by examining her practice of “negativism” in order to discuss her idea about the moral potential of novel. With a consultation to Murdoch’s philosophy and her three novels, Under the Net (1954), The Bell (1958), and The Black Prince (1973), this study at different level demonstrates Murdoch’s negative strategies tackling with the problems of moral philosophy in the postwar Britain. The first chapter posits Murdoch under the context of postwar British and continental philosophy and examines how she through her use of paradoxical realism negates and interacts with the contemporary logical positivism. The second chapter traces the association between Murdoch and the dialectical techniques of Christian mysticism to see how her novels approach her Platonic vision of Goodness in an extra-linguistic realm. The last chapter turns to Murdoch’s exploration of the nature of artwork and demonstrates how she discuss the moral agency of artwork with a negation of her own authorial voice in her first person writer fiction. The discussion in these chapters overall concludes that with Murdoch’s negativism she gives her novel a form of self-reflexivity that contributes to the moral potentials of her novel. |
