| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | A narrative, defined as the content of a story and the form of telling (Ricoeur, 1984), has been recognized as a mode of communication. Delivering issues and attaining persuasion through narratives have also been frequently observed integrating with metaphor. However, this prevalence has not yet been clearly and sufficiently investigated with the roles and functions of metaphor in persuasion tasks.
To clarify, we adopted the mapping principle proposed by Su (2000) and Ahrens (2002) to analyze the mapping and what gets mapped in the collected metaphorical narratives through the data-driven approach. After the tokens of entities, qualities and functions were examined, the conceptual metaphors were then identified accordingly. The results showed that the content transformation mainly relied on a high number of entities. Also, persuasion in metaphorical narratives could be reinforced by viewing narrative structures as a reference and considering the co-occurrence of storytelling strategies like hendiatris and imagery. The investigation of the mappings in metaphorical narratives further validates the applicability of the mapping principle of entities, qualities and functions. To conclude, the research elucidates how and why metaphor is adopted in narratives, and how persuasion could be reinforced. | en |
