Recreational activity is one of the most important means for people to develop emotional bonding with recreation settings. Such emotional connection is developed gradually through long-term interaction with place. Although researchers believed that activity involvement is an antecedent of place attachment, but the associations between the two is not very consistent. Depending on the types of activity, studies have found the relationships between activity involvement and place attachment could be positive or insignificant. In addition, previous studies mostly explored the direct relationship between activity involvement and place attachment, and only few studies had examined how activity involvement leads to setting attachment. The present study intended to investigate the effect of different activities on the relationship between activity involvement and place attachment, as well as to understand how activity involvement led to place attachment. The relationship between activity and affective bonding in recreational sites was investigated with three studies. The first two studies focused on the influence of activity chractoristics on the relationship between involvement and attachment. Previous studies have suggested that depending on the nature of the activities, their level of resource dependency seems to be different. Therefore, some activities may highly rely on resource while others don't. In addition, flow experience can be regarded as a feature of activity, which is an optimal psychological state. When in flow, a person becomes totally involved in an activity and focuses on the activity itself. Some activities will make people more focus on the activity itself, while others are easy to focus on activities and place. In the third study, activity involvement, investment model and place attachment were investigated to find out how emotional bonding in place can be formed through activity involvemen. On‐site surveys were conducted for all three experiments. The results of study 1 showed that place attachment correlated positively with activity involvement when the activity is highly dependent on resources, while no significant correlation was found in the low resource dependent activities. Similarly, the second study showed that place attachment correlated positively with activity involvement for the low flow experience activities, while no significant correlation was found in the high flow experience activities. The results of the third study revealed that the model of activity involvement influencing place attachment was valid, which indicated the factors of investment model mediate the relationship between activity involvement and place attachment. The current study suggested that positive involvement-attachment association must be on the premise of resource-dependent activities or lower flow experience activities. When exploring the relationship between activity involvement and place attachment, it is necessary to consider the impact of the nature of activity. The current study also indicated the necessity to consider other factors between the two, which will contribute to our understanding of the relationship between activity involvement and place attachment. The current results would also help landscape designer to manage better landscape planning and design in the future. |
