Abstract: Twenty years ago, I had a very special English learning experience. When most of my friends were having fun during the summer vacation, my father did an experiment on me and my brother. He decided to hold this specially designed boot camp to help us learn English. It turned out that that month in the summer really changed my life as well as my brother’s. We accomplished the mission impossible. We mastered English within merely 30 days.
In February 2012, I founded HOPE English together with my brother, trying to help all the English learners acquire this skill efficiently like we did. We bootstrapped for two years and finally launched our online English learning system, Gong Qi Bu Bei in July 2014. Within only three months, we made it break even. At that time, we knew that we needed to expand this to our neighboring Asian countries who are also struggling with English learning.
It took us 3 years to grow from a startup with only 2 brothers to a medium-sized team of more than 50. If there was this one factor that caused our success, I would say our unique patented product was definitely the key.
Just like the feedback we got from all the Internet veterans on day one, when we chose to go global, many told us not to; they thought it was completely a stupid decision. And exactly like how we reacted back then, we chose to ignore those advice and started our market research.
Now, with years into this journey of expansion, we’ve learned so much about how cultural differences can affect decision making when we needed prioritize our limited resource. In this business plan, I would like to introduce our findings about the English e-learning industry in Japan, utilizing some practical growth hacking and market analysis skills.
