Commonality of language plays an important role in the facilitation of trade, investment, and migration of highly skilled labor. East Asian governments such as China, Japan and the Republic of Korea are aware of the positive ramifications of a language that is spoken by many, people are actively promoting their language abroad. However, available data reveals that language is still an impeding factor for the success of policies that aim to attract investment and skilled labor from abroad. Should governments promote their language abroad? If so, how is successful promotion of languages achieved? To answer this question, a multiple regression analysis using student enrollment numbers as the dependent variable was conducted. The results show that the biggest motivating factor for studying a language is largely economic and active promotion and will, therefore, yield only limited success. |
