Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate three modern English translations of Pindar’s Olympian 1 according to the principles of translation evaluation based in Systemic Functional Linguistics. I have chosen translations made by C. M. Bowra, Richmond Lattimore, and David D. Mulroy, all of them eminent classical scholars with a considerable and well-respected record of translating Ancient Greek texts into English. When I analyze and evaluate the different translations of the ode I have selected, I expect to point out the similarities and differences between the original and each of the translations as well as the similarities and difference between the different translations themselves. I first offer an analysis of the original text to find out how its Textual, Experiential and Interpersonal meanings are realized. Then, I analyze the different translations to examine how and why the translations succeed or fail to create equivalent Textual, Experiential and Interpersonal meanings. Finally, I hope to show why, in what respects and in what sections a particular translation is to be preferred to other translations of the same ode.
