R. Hymes proposed two models of divinity and of divine-human relations: the bureaucratic model on the one hand, the personal model on the other. These two models, used in different propositions by different social actors, constitute competing strands of Chinese religion and are negotiated in an Offering (chiao). This study of a Chinese fishing community in Malaysia that connected to a trade network between the Chinese in Southeast Asia showed that the personal model is better able to explain the nature of local gods than the bureaucratic model. Members of the community began with an offering ritual regularly in the 1960s when they went under an economic transformation. In the transformation process, members of that community interpreted repaying the loan of divine money for ghosts in the form of paper money as repaying debts of gratitude for them. The rise of cult of hell gods emerged in the 1990s when the fishery in Malaysia went under recessionary pressures, and many fishermen became factory workers, bookies or loan sharks. The personal model partly informed the cult of genuinely bureaucratic hell gods. |
