This study examines how transportation infrastructure affects population distribution within a metropolitan area, using panel data from 1,514 villages in Northern Taiwan (1998--2024). Employing two-way fixed effects and long-difference models, we find that highways reduce core-area population (-2.16%) while metro rail increases it (+1.93%). In sub-core areas, transportation effects depend on land supply: without redevelopment zones, both highways and metro show negative effects; with redevelopment, effects turn positive. Long-run analysis reveals complete suburbanization from highways (core -17.19%, fringe +8.77%), while rail effects diminish over time. The findings highlight the necessity of coordinating transportation with land supply policies. |
