In the exploration of unmarried women's experiences in heterosexual intimate relationships, this study delves into the construction of cohabiting spaces and the manifestation of intimacy. It examines how the meaning of these spaces transforms from the beginning of a relationship to its end, profoundly impacting the individuals involved. Through interviews with multiple participants, the research synthesizes the core roles that cohabiting space plays at different stages of an intimate relationship.

Cohabiting space is affirmed as a central domain for women to build intimacy, establish a sense of belonging, and express their desires. Like a "home," it serves as a vessel for the self, where jointly purchased items and the shared routines of daily life weave a private world that becomes a tangible vehicle for love and desire to be freely expressed. The layout and usage patterns of the space both facilitate and constrain the creation of intimate connections and the flow of desire.

However, when an intimate relationship ends, the meaning of the cohabiting space undergoes a dramatic shift. The former home may transform into a "trauma space" laden with negative emotions. The "spatial deprivation" that follows a breakup manifests as an asymmetry of power in the allocation of living rights and spatial resources, leading to a dual loss—both material and emotional—for both the one who leaves and the one who stays.

Overall, the study reveals the complex journey of cohabiting space in the intimate relationships of unmarried cisgender women, from the initial construction of emotional and erotic intimacy to the subsequent transformation of the space's meaning and the loss of a sense of security after a relationship ends. This research underscores the pivotal role of space in intimate relationships and its profound impact on an individual's psyche and life after a breakup, offering valuable empirical evidence for understanding the dynamic links between intimacy, gender, and space.
