As global news media face increasing challenges in capturing audience attention, informing a broader public about valuable and in-depth issues has become a critical concern for contemporary journalism. Originating in Europe and the US, “Comics Journalism” is a storytelling technique that conveys news through graphic narratives. This medium produces culturally innovative news content, expanding the audience by leveraging a novel form of expression. It represents an exploration of both format and meaning. This thesis focuses on the development of comics journalism in Taiwan, digging into this medium's production strategies and its role of innovative communication, becoming a supplement to previous research about graphic novels and comic studies. On the other hand, the thesis dives into comic production experiences and strategies of The Reporter, Initium Media, Mirror Media, and Slowork Publishing by using the concept of field theory and the case study method. Also, the study includes semi-structured interviews with 10 reporters, editors, and cartoonists. The study indicates that when news media or publishers dedicate themselves to comics journalism, they should first be aware of breakthroughs and innovations and value the unique ways in which the medium of comics creates in empathetic storytelling. In the actual production process, the production team creates a dynamic working structure through cooperation with reporters, cartoonists, and product managers/editors. How comics journalism is positioned influences its presentation and promotion. The study highlights that the medium of comics journalism is still an emerging format in Taiwan’s media and audience landscape, requiring further accumulation of works and experiences. In the future, media that seek to develop comics journalism should not only consider production resources and talents but also tailor promotional strategies to the characteristics of comics. |
