The study aims to elucidate Akira Nakamura’s political thought, focusing on his observations regarding democracy and the Emperor System in postwar Japan, as well as his conceptualization of Nominal Monarchy (Tenno Kyōsei, 天皇虚政), an idea derived from his exploration of the Emperor System.
Initially, this study reviewed relevant literature on the “Youth Culture Association” (Seinen Bunka Kaigi, 青年文化会議) during the Allied Occupation period around 1946. The goal was to contextualize Nakamura’s stance as a “Postwar Japanese New Liberalist”, shedding light on how he reflected on postwar politics and ideology, with particular attention to his position on national democracy and the emperor’s sovereignty in the context of constitutional reform. Furthermore, it explored the manner in which Postwar Japanese Liberal Intellectuals criticized Japanese imperialism and the modern Emperor System, which provides an essential framework for understanding his theories.
Additionally, this study examined Nakamura’s arguments on the Emperor System from the 1960s onward. First, it analyzed his discussion of Western cosmology, comparing it to his interpretation of its Chinese counterpart. It further investigated how he drew on Chinese philosophical traditions, Kokugaku, as well as Kunio Yanagita’s folklore to support his reasoning about the Nominal Monarch. Then, it explored how he employed European conceptions of kingship, especially Frazer’s theory of divine kingship, to characterize differences between the origins of the Emperor’s power and Frazer’s theories.
Building on these analyses, this study highlighted Nakamura’s New Liberalist criticism towards the modern Emperor System and elaborated on the special sociohistorical context within which the concept of Nominal Monarchy emerged in Japan.
