As Asian culture gains increasing prominence on a global scale, the portrayal of Asian women in Hollywood’s film industry has become a central topic in academic and cultural discussions. Historically, Asian characters have often been depicted through negative or stereotypical lenses, with Asian women frequently portrayed as submissive, dependent on men, or seeking validation. In recent years, driven by the promotion of multicultural policies and the rise of the Asian film market, the representation of Asian women in Hollywood has shown a trend toward diversification. However, the underlying narrative evolution and cultural implications of these portrayals remain insufficiently explored and require further systematic analysis.
This study focuses on three representative works—Crazy Rich Asians, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Brothers Sun to investigate how the image of Asian mothers is constructed through cinematic texts and to uncover the cultural meanings and narrative strategies behind these portrayals. Using semiotic textual analysis, the research examines cinematic language, visual symbols, and narrative dialogues within the films, analyzing the representation and interactions of Asian mothers in the contexts of “marital relationships,” “intergenerational dynamics,” and “parent-child relationships.” Additionally, through a review of relevant literature, this study explores how contemporary Asian family-themed narratives have evolved and innovated under the influence of multicultural policies and social changes.
The findings reveal that the portrayal of Asian mother characters in Hollywood films is gradually shifting away from singular stereotypes toward more diverse and complex representations. While some stereotypes persist, these works increasingly employ multi-layered narratives to explore broader possibilities, enriching the depth and value of Asian female portrayals. This study aims to provide a systematic examination of the evolution of Asian female characters, offering insights and references for future multicultural storytelling and character development.
