Anping jars, widely produced at Chinese kiln sites, were used to store various goods and transported via different trade routes and merchants to their destinations. Mainly distributed in East and Southeast Asia, Anping jars were introduced into various settlements by diverse groups of people. The significance of Anping jars varied throughout the process of production, transportation, and consumption. Due to the distinct trade, political, and socio-cultural backgrounds of each region, the paths and types of Anping jars entering different regions varied, as did their local uses, repurposing, and the meanings ascribed to them. These variations reflect how these jars moved from their origin to consumption sites, how their uses and meanings evolved, and how they transitioned from trade commodities to items integrated into local communities, reflecting the socio-cultural differences or changes of these communities. This thesis examines two consumption sites: the Kiwulan site in Yilan and the Northeast Bastion of Fort Zeelandia in Tainan, distinct from each other in peoples, social cultures, political environments, and trade activities. I analyze the forms, manufacturing marks, and measured attributes of Anping jars, using statistical tools to compare the stratigraphic contexts of the Northeast Bastion of Fort Zeelandia with the dating and periodization data of the Kiwulan site. I also examine previous research and reports to trace the production, distribution, and consumption stages of Anping jars, exploring how political, trade, and social environments of the two sites affect the range of their obtained jar types and their usage contexts, changes, and meanings in each site. This research aims to provide a new perspective on Taiwan as a major porcelain consumption and trade hub since the 17th century, highlighting the unique characteristics of different regions. Additionally, it seeks to enrich the foundational data on Anping jars through the findings from the Northeast Bastion of Fort Zeelandia site and Kiwulan site. |
