English as a lingua franca (ELF) is the main means for international communication, and the number of non-native speakers far exceeds that of native speakers. One of the main characteristics of non-native speakers is their accents. However, for interpreters, accents can deteriorate their performance. In addition, conference preparation has been proven to be effective in improving interpreter performance, but the effectiveness of incorporating accent preparation into the conference preparation stage remains to be explored. This study adopted quantitative and qualitative research methods to explore the impact of accent preparation through experiments, interviews, and observations. The participants were twelve trainee interpreters and were divided into two groups. The first group first prepared for the Vietnamese accent using audio files, while the second group prepared for the Thai accent. Then, the two groups of participants performed simultaneous interpreting from English to Chinese for speakers with the two accents. The quantitative analysis results indicate that accent preparation did not significantly impact interpreting performance. However, qualitative analysis results suggest an improvement in interpreting performance with accent preparation, with active preparation showing superior effectiveness compare to passive preparation. The discrepancy between quantitative and qualitative findings may be attributed to three factors in the preparation process: time, scope, and topic. The results help understand the relationship between accents and interpreter performance from the perspective of conference preparation and expand the scope of conference preparation. |
