第二章著重在另外四個短篇故事“What is Remembered”、“Floating Bridge”、“Comfort” 和 “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”。 This thesis takes Nobel Prize winning author Alice Munro’s short story collection Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage (2001) as the object of study, aiming to explore the significance of female runaways with the keyword “bargain.” The Hateship collection includes nine individual short stories which share the common theme of patriarchal entrapment and female escapes. I propose to read the female protagonists’ cyclical movement of entrapments, runaways, and returns with Deniz Kandiyoti’s concept of “patriarchal bargains.” For Kandiyoti, patriarchal bargains denote the various strategies female members undertake to optimize their survival in different types of patriarchal systems. In Hateship, I argue that the female runaways are not passive escapes but strategic bargaining methods to achieve female ideal lives within the patriarchal society. Thus, bargaining refers to the sophisticated negotiation through which where Munro’s heroines actively search for or skillfully take advantage of circumstances to circumvent patriarchal constraints. This thesis is divided into two body chapters. Chapter One explores four stories that center around the entrance or exit of marriage as the bargaining method for a transformed life. “Family Furnishings” and “Nettles” both see the female protagonists pursuing a writing career, with the former entering marriage and the latter leaving it. Likewise, “Post and Beam” and “Queenie” trace the heroines taking marriage as a bargaining method, but both explore the pattern of running away within the family structure of sisterhood. Sisterly bonds complicate the calculation of loss and gains in escaping into marriages. Chapter Two investigates another four stories from Hateship that see chronic illnesses opening up spaces for the female protagonists to step out of the role of wives: “What is Remembered,” “Floating Bridge,” “Comfort,” and “The Bear Came Over the Mountain.” Unlike common assumptions that see chronic illnesses in the household as burdening female family members, chronic illnesses in “What is Remembered” and “Floating Bridge” justify the heroine’s temporary runaway from their long-term marriage. In a similarly empowering effect, chronic illnesses in “Comfort” and “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” lead to an expanded female interpersonal network alongside diminishing male authority. In the concluding chapter, I assert that the heroines are active participants of the patriarchal system who utilize runaways for optimal survival. |
