With the progress of modernization, the connections between landscape, life, and society in rural communities are gradually breaking apart and collapsing. Especially in local economies, as they have moved to domination by commercialism and an orientation toward tourism, it has often become impossible to see the connection between self and locale. How do we reclaim the community's subjectivity and autonomy through innovation and empowerment, and reestablish connections between the land, food, and people? This research project is a participatory, action-oriented one, centered around 'rural community', with the Longtan region, located between the urban and rural parts of Taoyuan, as the case study. The project employed the practical application of social design of food in Longtan as an attempt at theorization. This project attempted to implement the concept of 'Edible Community Networks', using food as a core medium, to connect three major domains: the democratic & environmental economies; cross-cultural landscape identity; and social design. The aim was to explore how the introduction of regional revitalization plans sparked actions toward social design, as people in specific areas of Longtan operated, with resources both inside and outside rural communities, through 'food exchange'; and how, through this process, the connections between food systems and the social environment were reconfigured and modified. This form of change can be theorized as a project in cross-cultural social design. This research project found that: 1. The process of implementing 'Edible Community Networks' as democratic, environmental economies fixed imbalances in urban and rural development, and brought economic life back to the community. 2. At the same time, it realized a domain for cross-cultural exchange, prompting cross-cultural dialog through agricultural technology exchange, integration of agricultural food transactions, cultural cooperation, and cultural exchange regarding food. 3. The social design of food is in a process of metamorphosis and of managing social innovations. Through the design and development of the space and products, key figures are given the chance to participate, and to create networks though collaborative creation. For the new generation in particular, taking part in innovative social actions is a way to transform oneself, and further, to establish connections between oneself and society. |
