zh_TW
Regurgitation and reingestion (RR) behavior is an abnormal behavior common in captive great apes. Although past research examined physiological factors of eating behavior affecting RR, psychological factors were less thoroughly studied. One proposed psychological factor was the enjoyment of eating favored food, which emerged when removing favored food from meals in orangutans decreased RR. Food variety is also suggested to affect the enjoyment of eating food in human studies by increasing food intake within a meal. However, the effect of food variety on RR is less understood. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the effect of food variety and proportion of favored food on RR behavior. A two by two factorial design with a combination of low and high food variety and proportion of favored food was used to observe the changes in RR behavior of 5 male chimpanzees at the Taipei Zoo. Continuous focal sampling of RR is collected and analyzed with generalized linear model. The results showed the effect of food variety is significant on the bouts of RR behavior in one of the behavioral groups, including chimpanzee A and B (Pr(>|z|) = 0.011) as well as for the individual chimpanzee A (Pr(>|z|) =0.027).en
