Japanese sugar manufacturers built many railroads in central and south Taiwan after 1909. Reducing the cost of transport sugar cane was the primary purpose of the railroad. At the same time, part of the railroad equipped the services of carrying guests. We utilize the population data from 1906 to 1919 at the village level and implement difference in difference method to discover the rise of fertility rate and net migration rate when the railroad passed through the villages. We consider that the sugarcane railroad let farmers could cultivate sugarcane. Cultivating sugarcane needed more labor force, so the farmers were more willing to take care of children, and more people migrate into the village. Furthermore, since women could participate in sugarcane production, we find that the increase in female fertility rate was more significant than males, and the rate of female enrollment to elementary school decreased. The result shows that parents who lived in the village where the railroad passed preferred their daughter to work at home rather than attend school. On the other hand, we also find that the mortality rate decreased when the railroad passed. It might because people can gain medicine resources more conveniently. However, when the pandemic broke out, such as the 1915 malaria and 1918 Spanish flu, the mortality rate would rise more in the village where the railroad passed through. That is to say, the villages with the sugarcane railroad were more likely to suffer from pandemic attack even if the sugarcane railroad could bring the convenience of transportation. |
