This research is an examination of the relations between gender, family structure, adolescents’ perceived economic pressure, objective economic condition, social support, and adolescents’ depressed mood, and to see if social supports have a buffering effect. This research used purpose sampling to obtain information from 7th and 8th grade students in Wen-Shan and Wan-Hua district. There are 748 valid samples including 49.9% male, 50.1% female, and 80.7% dual-parent family, 19.3% non-dual parent family. The findings of this research show that females have higher depressed mood than males. Considering the influence of other variables, the influence of family structure on adolescents’ depressed mood is not significant anymore. When gender and family structure are controlled, perceived economic pressure, family SES, parent support, nonparent emotional support, and nonparent instrumental support all can explain adolescents’ depressed mood: the higher perceived economic pressure, higher family SES, lower parent support, lower nonparent emotional support, lower nonparent instrumental support, the higher adolescents’ depressed mood is. Among these, parent support is the strongest predictor. Because of the characteristics of the adolescents in this study, social support doesn’t have a buffering effect but the main effect. Based on these results, it is suggested that the government should have a firm family policy, and increase welfare services in public-assistance policy. Workers should concern nonpoor adolescents’ depressed mood as well as poor adolescents’ depressed mood, and use programs such as parental education to help parents build a supportive family environment to keep adolescents’ emotionally healthy. |
