Abstract: | Due to the evolution of smart phone, the requirement of high resolution LCD panel for hand-held devices also grows. When the image data is transmitted to the LCD panel, the image data will be stored in the frame buffer of the LCD control IC through the transfer interface first. When the screen is updating, the image data stored in the frame buffer will be read out and displayed on the screen. As the resolution of LCD panel increases, the area of the frame buffer also increases. The cost of system also grows.
In this thesis, we propose a low-cost near-lossless rate-controllable compression algorithm (NRC) and corresponding hardware architecture. The NRC algorithm can compress the input image in order to reduce the area of the frame buffer and preserve the image quality of the reconstructed images. The NRC algorithm predicts the current pixel by previous pixels and utilizes the previous prediction errors to dynamically adjust the parameter of encoder to improve the coding efficiency. The proposed NRC algorithm also considers the characteristic of human visual system while deciding the quantization step, making the reconstructed image perceptually the same as the original image. In this thesis, an image compression engine and an image decompression engine suitable for the LCD panel with resolution 640*480 are implemented by the UMC 90 nm process. The area of the compression engine is 0.2 mm2.The operational frequency of the compression engine is 40 MHz. The area of the decompression engine is 0.132 mm2. The operational frequency of the decompression engine is 37 MHz. After adding the compression engine and the decompression engine, the reduced area of the frame buffer is 10.75 mm2. |
