This thesis examines how late Ming scholar-officials, later remembered as the “Donglin Six Gentlemen,” imprisoned and tortured under the ascendancy of the eunuch Wei Zhongxian, understood their duty to the Ming state and lived with a strong sense of guilt and indebtedness. Drawing on memorials, prison writings, personal letters, collected works, and early Qing historical accounts, it explores how these men, described in contemporary discourse as junzi, identified their place within a world of intense political conflict and competing moral claims. The study views the vocabulary of grace and repayment, articulated through the paired terms en and bao, as a central thread, showing how a “logic of reciprocity” provided a moral frame for their political choices and their self-understanding. Within this frame, dying in office or dying through remonstrance could be seen as a proper way to fulfill one’s life. The chapters develop this inquiry in sequence. The first chapter introduces the rationale of the research, situating the study within scholarship on the Tianqi factional conflict and the Donglin movement. The following chapters discuss how the institutional responsibilities of remonstrance officials framed “speaking straight” (zhi) at court as a sacred duty, how the Six Gentlemen spoke of “dying in service” and “foolish persistence,” and how recurring phrases about grace, repayment, debt, shame, and guilt defined who was “qualified” or “unworthy” to serve. The conclusion consolidates these analyses, showing how overlapping obligations to ruler, state, principle, and family created a situation of “no escape from duty,” in which guilt was not only a burden but also a source of moral strength. Within this moral frame of grace and repayment, self-justification is pursued through service and sacrifice, yet never completed, since the debt can never be paid in full. From this perspective, the thesis offers a more explicit discussion of guilt and shame in conversation with existing work on Donglin integrity and moral lineage. |
