After the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work gradually became the norm, giving rise to the growing popularity of digital nomadism. This lifestyle, which allows people to travel while working without being bound by time or location, has also begun to emerge in Taiwan. By breaking away from the constraints of the traditional nine-to-five routine and office environment, it invites individuals to reconsider what alternative forms of life and work might look like.
However, leaving behind familiar structures and institutional routines introduces a different set of challenges. In a lifestyle where the boundaries of time and space are blurred, individuals often struggle with self-discipline, maintaining relationships, and achieving financial stability.
This in-depth report focuses on the lived experiences of Taiwanese digital nomads. It explores how they embark on this path within Taiwan’s unique sociocultural context, examining their motivations, everyday practices, and the difficulties they face in a borderless way of life. Ultimately, it considers how these individuals continue to pursue self-realization and an ideal lifestyle while navigating the uncertainties that come with freedom.
