Pili Puppet Theater, commonly known as "Pili," has produced numerous widely acclaimed works over its 35-year history, continuously innovating in the realm of music. This study focuses on character theme music within Pili, exploring how specific characters shape their image through music. Existing literature on Pili’s music primarily consists of analyses of sheet music and lyrics, with relatively little discussion on the experiences of fans as listeners. Building upon previous academic discourse, this study will take the character "Di-Min," who debuted in 2016, as a case study to examine how theme music, character design, and narrative development contribute to the auditory construction of a character's image.
The research will examine four character theme songs/musical pieces produced for Di-Ming from 2016 to 2018, analyzing how they were utilized in the context of drama scenes and live performances to create a distinctive character image. By combining textual analysis of the music with insights from puppetry enthusiasts who appreciate Di-Ming, this study aims to investigate how character theme music constructs Di-Ming’s identity and becomes a recognizable auditory signature for fans.
