The maker movement and makerspaces have gained global prominence since 2005, especially in Western countries. In Taiwan, the National Central Library promotes the establishment of makerspaces with the Guidelines for Establishing and Providing Library Makerspaces. However, research on public library makerspaces is scarce. This study examines the New Taipei City Library, the earliest to develop makerspace services among municipal-level libraries, exploring its service content, design process, and influencing factors, providing insights for similar libraries.
This research adopts a case study approach, examining three branches of the library. Data were collected through website information, project documents, observations, and interviews with staff and users. Using grounded theory for analysis, the study constructs a public library maker space service model.
Findings show that makerspace services aim to enhance creativity, increase library use, and foster connections. All branches use a reservation-based system, providing nonmakerspace services in the same area. Service design involves three stages: explanation, design, and delivery, with external contractors handling specialized tasks on design and delivery stages. Key factors affecting outcomes include resource availability, space design, equipment, activity content, promotion, and user backgrounds.
The study recommends situating makerspaces along main pathways or using clear signage, emphasizing marketing, and operating on a reservation basis to address staffing constraints. Locally relevant equipment is suggested to reflect the library’s cultural
preservation role.
