This study aims to investigate the response of code-compliant reinforced-concrete special moment-resisting frames under seismic loading using nonlinear response-history analyses (NRHA), and to compare selection and scaling of ground-motions. The reliability of numerical simulations in ETABS is validated through shaking table tests results conducted by Koichi Kajiwara et al. (2015) at E-Defense. Subsequently, three reinforced concrete building cases of 5, 15, and 25 stories are designed in accordance with current codes. NRHA are conducted through TEASPA and TEASDA developed by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering to define hinges and hysteretic models. Ground motions are modified by amplitude scaling and spectral matching. Through analysis results, we discuss inter-story drift ratios, story shears, and floor accelerations under the influence of factors such as seismic intensity, building scale, and type of ground motions. Based on a large quantity of NRHA results, ground-motion suites are selected using random sampling and greedy algorithms to evaluate the required number of ground motions for different response assessments. Finally, preliminary discussions are conducted regarding amplitude scaling requirements for ground motions in Taiwanese and American codes.
