This study employs the theoretical frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel de Certeau to investigate the poetic culture of the millennials (individuals born between the 1980s and 1990s) in Taiwan. With the exception of the introductory Chapter One and concluding Chapter Five, this study comprises three chapters that respectively delve into three distinct aesthetic positions within the poetic culture of Taiwanese millennials, corresponding to various cultural formations. Chapter Two scrutinizes the lyrical tradition of hegemonic culture. It delineates how millennial poets, including those embedded within academic institutions and others hailing from literary backgrounds yet refraining from scholarly pursuits, harness the cultural capital embedded within the “Taiwanese lyric tradition” to cultivate their poetic sensibilities. Chapter Three delves into the realm of “alternative narrative” and its realistic imaginings. It explores how poets deconstruct everyday life through the lens of various identity affiliations, assuming roles that reflect contemporary societal citizenship, thereby engaging in authentic portrayals. This chapter aims to reimagine “locality” or “community” in Taiwan by examining how poets navigate and contribute to these constructs through their multifaceted expressions of identity within the context of modern society. Chapter Four explores the Taiwanese popular poetry as oppositional culture. It accentuates the dual thematic elements of “world-weary structure of feeling” and “meme culture,” probing into how poets, particularly in the post-2010 era of burgeoning online social platforms, embody the ethos of the “art of the weak.” Additionally, it juxtaposes these phenomena with the global Instapoetry trend, offering a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of contemporary Taiwanese poetry under the stewardship of millennial poets. Through this macroscopic discourse, the study endeavors to rectify prevailing inaccuracies within extant poetic historiography while providing timely insights and analyses of diverse aesthetic phenomena manifesting within the contemporary Taiwanese literary landscape. |
