Background: Internet addiction is a public issue of great concern nowadays, and the prevalence of adolescents and young adults is increasing. Previous studies have pointed out that freshmen are in the transition from adolescence to early adulthood. During such a period, they face multiple pressures, such as developmental tasks and campus adjustment. As a result, they may experience more emotional distress and take Internet use as a coping strategy. And thus so, they may be at increasing risk of Internet addiction. Based on a model of compensatory Internet use and self-medication, this study attempted to investigate the psychological aspects of Internet addiction, to understand the relationship between positive coping resources, negative emotional responses, and Internet addiction, and to explore the relative importance of three different positive coping resources. Methods: This study first revised the Positive Coping Resources Scale and Negative Emotional Responses Scale, and examined their psychometric properties. Then, the online self-report questionnaire was administered to freshmen of the 111th academic year at NTU (n = 916). Results: (1) The percentage of NTU freshmen with Internet addiction was 18.7%, with a higher percentage in females (53.2%) than males (46.8%). (2) The Internet addiction group displayed significantly less positive coping resources and more negative emotional responses as compared to the non-Internet addiction group. (3) The overall model fit was good, but only the self-resource of the positive coping resources well predicted Internet addiction through the mediating effect of negative emotional responses. Discussions: The results of this study reveal that self-resources are relatively important positive coping resources for freshmen, as compared top other social resources. Accordingly, we can provide concrete suggestions to help freshmen adapting their campus life. |
